Zoning for Flood Resilient Retail: Manhattan Workshop

November 21, 2017 @ 9:00 am - 11:00 am

Do you own a business or manage property that was impacted by Sandy?
Do you work, shop, or dine in the Manhattan floodplain?
Come to our workshop to learn how zoning changes can help make your community more resilient to flooding!

NYC Department of City Planning is holding a workshop on zoning for flood resilient retail, hosted at the Downtown Alliance’s LMHQ. The event will begin with a presentation about resiliency challenges faced by retail corridors and resources available to small business owners to become more resilient. The presentation will be followed by a workshop, where participants can help shape a future change to special zoning rules that govern development in the floodplain.

Workshop Goals:

  • Learn about flood risk in Manhattan and the resilient building design options for businesses in the floodplain;
  • Learn about a new grant program for Hurricane Sandy-impacted small businesses;
  • Find out how zoning can promote floodproofing strategies that ensure vibrant retail corridors;
  • Provide feedback on zoning incentives for keeping retail spaces level with the sidewalk within Manhattan’s floodplain; and
  • Share input on urban design priorities to mitigate the impact of possible blank walls that may result from constructing resilient mixed-use buildings.

Manhattan Borough President Gale Brewer
